Postoperative Complications of Scleral Buckling
Seminars in Ophthalmology, 2017Scleral buckling has an important role in the repair of certain categories of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. These include detachments in young phakic patients, detachments associated with dialysis, and also in conjuction with vitrectomy in patients who have sustained trauma or have developed proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

This paper is concerned with the complications which may be encountered during the following five steps of surgery: (1) exposure of the surgical field, (2) localization of retinal breaks, (3) undermining of scleral flaps and application of diathermy, (4) release of subretinal fluid, (5) tying of mattress sutures and securing the circling band.

AXIAL LENGTH FOLLOWING SCLERAL BUCKLING
Retina, 1982AbstractThe change in the axial length of the eye following 360° scleral buckling using 1/2 thickness, 7.5 mm silicone implanted in a bed of scleral dissection was measured in ten patients and ten autopsy eyes.

Volume Displacement of Scleral Buckles
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1985Indentation of the eye wall by a scleral buckle displaces volume from the vitreous cavity. We developed a mathematical formula to calculate the volume displacement caused by a scleral buckle and verified the accuracy of this mathematical model by performing scleral buckles in 21 cadaver eyes and three eyes undergoing retinal reattachment surgery.

In our first paper the preoperative management for an uncomplicated retinal detachment was discussed.1In many instances, however, patients with retinal detachment present additional problems which may modify the preoperative care of the patient. The most important of these problems are interference with satisfactory ophthalmoscopy, glaucoma, uveitis ...

Infections Following Scleral Buckling Procedures
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1974Cultures of 638 routine preoperative conjunctival specimens prior to retinal detachment surgery demonstrated bacterial contamination with Staphylococcus epidermidis in 37%, S aureus in 3%, Proteus in 1%, Klebsiella in 1%, and Pseudomonas in 0.2%. Postoperative infection with rejection of the scleral implants occurred in 4% (37) of 878 operations.
