Potential contraindications to scleral lens wear
Contact Lens and Anterior Eye, 2019Research and reviews have resulted in clear indications for scleral lens (SL) wear. Those indications include visual rehabilitation; therapeutic use in managing ocular surface diseases, lid and orbit disorders; and refractive correction to enhance visual quality, comfort and quality of life.

Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2014
A 50-year-old man presented with a papillomatous tarsoconjunctival tumor involving the medial two-thirds of the left upper eyelid. Office biopsy revealed papillary squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA). Rapid tumor growth with caruncular and forniceal conjunctival involvement continued, despite a trial of weekly interferon-α2b intralesional injection therapy.

Abstract: Traumatic injury in the pediatric population often results in significant refractive errors that if left untreated can lead to amblyopia. Scleral contact lenses (ScCLs) have recently gained popularity in this population for efficacy in treatment of significant refractive errors, including irregularity astigmatism and corneal ...

New Scleral Lens For Electroretinography
SPIE Proceedings, 1986This paper presents a scleral lens specifically designed for the implementation of new electroretinography (E.R.G.) procedures including ganzeld ERG, pattern ERG and optic fiber ERG. Ganzfeld ERG requires a direct, uniform illumination of the retina and is usually obtained within a ball stimulation which provides precisely controlled stimulation ...

Scleral lens use in dry eye syndrome
Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2015Dry eye syndrome can be difficult to manage in severe or refractory cases. In patients in whom traditional treatments have limited efficacy, alternative treatments may be considered for dry eye syndrome, including scleral lenses. The present review summarizes the evidence regarding scleral lens use in dry eye syndrome.Scleral lenses have become a ...

Lens-induced astigmatism after perforating scleral injury
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 2002Within 6 weeks of a penetrating scleral injury that included vitreous prolapse, a 6-year-old boy developed lenticular astigmatism with a regular component of 5.5 diopters (D). Visible indentational folds in the posterior lens capsule, caused by anterior vitreous fibers and anterior hyaloid, were presumed to be the origin of the astigmatism.

Scleral Fixation of a Foldable Intraocular Lens
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 2002Abstract. Scleral fixation has become more popular and is now performed by surgeons all over the world. At present, there are no available foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) with holes that would enable tying a suture on to their haptic. We describe a method for using an available 3-piece acrylic foldable IOL with PMMA haptics for scleral fixation ...
