Unfused transverse foramen of the atlas vertebra in the Neandertal lineage fossils

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract In anatomically modern humans, the atlas can display an unfused transverse foramen (UTF) but currently the presence of UTF in the Neandertal lineage is uncertain due to a scarcity of prevalence studies and no exhaustive record of its presence throughout the entire hominin fossil record.

Are Shadows Only Coarsely Processed? Exploring Depth Discrimination with Cast Shadow Cue Conflicts Across Spatial Frequency [PDF]

open access: yesi-Perception, 2014
Shape-from-shading is a ubiquitous cue informing object identification and depth judgements. Cast-shadows contribute towards these judgements (see Mammassian, Knill and Kersten, 1998).

Re‐evaluation of a soft crested Edmontosaurin, with implications for hadrosaurid life appearance and diversity

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Hadrosaurid dinosaurs are generally regarded as “crested” or “non‐crested” depending on the presence or absence of a bony cranial crest. At least one supposedly “non‐crested” hadrosaur is known to have possessed a soft tissue cranial crest (or comb), based on an exceptionally preserved “mummified” specimen. Here we redescribe this specimen and

Oviposition preference of the neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros on artificial substrates of different colors

open access: yesCiência Rural, 2013
This study aimed to evaluate the oviposition preference of the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) on artificial substrates of different colors (felt woven). For this, ten pairs of stink bugs were transferred into plastic pots.

Effects of intermittent exposure to hypobaria and cold on the microarchitecture and morphofunctional profile of rat gastrocnemius muscle

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) enhances oxygen transport, muscle metabolism, and cardiovascular health; however, the combined effects of hypobaria and cold are less well understood. Exposure to these stressful environmental factors, even intermittently, can affect skeletal muscle due to its plasticity, thereby altering its metabolic and ...

Impact of the Invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål), in Mid-Atlantic Tree Fruit Orchards in the United States: Case Studies of Commercial Management

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2012
Four commercial orchards in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States were surveyed weekly in 2010 and 2011 for the presence of brown marmorated stink bug and the injury caused to both apple and peaches. Among tested sampling techniques, pyramid traps

The internal crest anatomy of Lambeosaurini (Hadrosauridae: Lambeosaurinae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The supracranial crests of lambeosaurine hadrosaurids have long been a focus of study due primarily to their extreme morphology. The external anatomy of lambeosaurine crests is understood to be highly variable between species, but variation in their internal anatomy is less well understood.
