A review of bridge scour: mechanism, estimation, monitoring and countermeasures

Natural Hazards, 2017
Scour of sediments around bridge foundations by the stream is the most significant contributing factor for bridge failures. The scour failures tend to occur without prior warning and have led to fatalities and economic loss every year. A significant amount of work has been conducted on bridge scour. Such efforts can be broadly classified into two major

Mechanics of Local Scour Around Submarine Pipelines

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1990
The primary objective of this study is to improve understanding of the mechanism causing scour in unidirectional current. Experiments have shown how local scour develops around submarine pipelines in noncohesive sediments. The study shows that piping is the dominant cause of the initiation of scour.

Mechanism of rock-bed scour due to impinging jet

Journal of Hydraulic Research/De Recherches Hydrauliques, 2010
Scour of rock bed downstream of high dams is mainly caused by the transient forces as a result of the propagation of fluctuating pressures, which is significantly controlled by the rock fracture-structure. The physical mechanism of rock disintegration and scour pool forming are analysed herein by considering the fracture-structure of rock bed.

Mechanics of jet scour downstream of a headcut

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 1993
Scour immediately downstream of a headcut is analyzed by considering the effect of jet diffusion on sediment detachment. The analytical development results in equations for: 1.

A review of the fluid mechanics of ocean scour

Ocean Engineering, 1982
Abstract The processes of scour hole formation are divided into components and discussed. The descriptive physics of ocean boundary layer flow and sediment dynamics are used to detail the similarities and differences between the processes of scour hole formation in marine and river environments.

Scour and Burial Mechanics of Objects in the Nearshore

IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2007
A process-based, numerical, hydrodynamic vortex lattice mine scour/burial model (VORTEX) is presented that simulates scour and burial of objects of arbitrary shape resting on a granular bed in the nearshore. There are two domains in the model formulation: a far-field where burial and exposure occur due to changes in the elevation of the seabed and a ...

Controlling Mechanism of Local Scouring

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1990
Experimental study of clear water scouring around a circular cylinder shows that the scour mechanism is coupled to the three-dimensional separation of the upstream boundary layer and the periodic vortex shedding in the wake of the cylinder. The first scour appears in the wake of the cylinder.
