Embedment and withdrawal stiffness predictions of self-tapping screws in timber
Construction and Building Materials, 2022In the construction of modern multi-storey mass timber structures, self-tapping screws are the preferred fasteners. In order the maximize the strength and stiffness of self-tapping screw connections, the screws are often inserted into timber members at an angle other than 90 degrees to the face of the member.

Abstract The research presented in this paper examines the performance of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels connected with self-tapping screws (STS). Half-lap joints with STS loaded in either shear or withdrawal along with an innovative solution combining these two approaches were evaluated in a total of 24 quasi-static monotonic and 15 ...

THE IMPACTS OF SCREW TIP, INCLINATION ANGLES AND NUMBER OF PENETRATION LAYERS ON SCREW WITHDRAWAL CAPACITY IN AUSTRALIAN MACHINE GRADED PINE [PDF]
Connections play an important role in timber structures as they govern the overall stiffness, load-carrying capacity, and most of the ductility in a timber structure. Due to the high axial load-carrying capacity and ease of installation, self-tapping screws are nowadays one of the most widely used fasteners in timber construction.

IMPACT OF TIMBER ORIGIN ON SCREW WITHDRAWAL CAPACITY
World Conference on Timber Engineering 2025Ductility in mass timber structures is primarily achieved through connections. The current Australian Timber Standard AS1720.1-2010 has not developed at the same rate as modern timber construction and provides simplified design methods that are not suitable for modern fasteners, such as self-tapping screws (STSs).

IMPACT OF MOISTURE CYCLING ON SCREW WITHDRAWAL CAPACITY OF TREATED AND UNTREATED RADIATA PINE
World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2023), 2023The increased use of wood products for construction has intensified the need to understand how moisture affects the mechanical properties of timber connections. The withdrawal capacity of dowel-type fasteners, such as screws, needs to be measured, or estimated, for the design of timber systems having connections with axially loaded dowel-type fasteners.

국내에서 생산된 파티클보드에 대한 나사못 유지력을 기존의 식으로부터 수정ㆍ보완된 예측 식으로 나타내기 위해 나사못 유지력실험을 실시했다. 본 연구에 사용된 나사못은 No. 6, No. 8 및 No. 10이었다.

A simple unified model for withdrawal of lag screws and glued-in rods
European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, 2010A mean stress failure criterion is applied to the Volkersen-model used for analysis of lag screws and glued-in rods subjected to withdrawal. Expressions are derived for pull-pull as well as pull-push loading conditions. The solutions for glued-in rods appear as special cases of the theory for lag screws, and the usual solutions for a maximum stress ...

A simplified model for withdrawal of screws from end-grain of timber
Construction and Building Materials, 2012Abstract A simple model based on quasi non-linear fracture mechanics is presented for estimating the withdrawal failure load of screws embedded in wood. The model takes into account major geometrical parameters such as the shank diameter, the length of the threaded area of the screw, the thread projection, and the pitch, and material properties such ...
