Abstract This is a translation of two presentations on the Buddhist Pure Land tradition at the beginning of Gyōnen's Jōdo Hōmon Genrushō. These are considered to be the primary proof texts (Indian textual sources) for the Pure Land tradition, and are labeled sūtra and śāstra (or in this case upadeśa). Extensive footnotes are included.
