Arctic sea ice extent and thickness
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Physical and Engineering Sciences, 1995Current knowledge on Arctic sea ice extent and thickness variability is reviewed, and we examine whether measurements to date provide evidence for the impact of climate change. The total Arctic ice extent has shown a small but significant reduction of (2.1 ± 0.9)% during the period 1978-87, after apparently increasing from a lower level in the early ...

Digital Processing By Sea Ice Thickness Measuring
[Proceedings] IGARSS'91 Remote Sensing: Global Monitoring for Earth Management, 2005The present paper deals with digital processing aspects of real superbroadband subsurface radar signals using the inverse filtration method in the presence or absence of a priori information about the form or spectrum of sounding signal. It is proposed a new radar calibration method based on a statistical approach which comprises energy spectra ...

Sea Ice Thickness Profiling And Under-Ice Oil Entrapment
Offshore Technology Conference, 1977ABSTRACT Results obtained with a unique dual-antenna impulse radar system used to profile first- and multi-year sea ice near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, are discussed. A description of the radar system is given along with representative field data.

Sea ice thickness distribution in Fram Strait
Nature, 1983HM nuclear submarine Sovereign has obtained the first synoptic measurements of the ice thickness distribution in Fram Strait, the main outflow from the Arctic Ocean. The ice nearest the ice edge is of quite different character from ice in the interior of the Strait, with a greater proportion of first-year ice and less pressure ridging.

Modeling a Variable Thickness Sea Ice Cover
Monthly Weather Review, 1980A numerical model simulating a variable thickness sea ice cover over a seasonal cycle is presented. The model includes a fixed depth mixed-layer formulation with open water heat absorption and lateral melting terms, and a mechanical distribution function consistent with the physics of the ridging process.

Enhanced Predictability of Antarctic Sea Ice through Sea Ice Thickness Assimilation
Understanding the mechanisms of Antarctic sea ice variability, as well as its predictability, remains a central challenge in climate modelling due to the sparseness of observations and the complex processes involved. This study assesses how incorporating sea ice thickness (SIT) observations can improve the reanalysis and prediction skills of Antarctic ...Williams, Nicholas +2 more
