Stochastic modeling of seafloor morphology: A parameterized Gaussian model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1989
Stochastic methods of analysis are useful for quantifying ensemble properties of small‐scale bathymetric features such as abyssal hills. In this paper we model the seafloor as a stationary, zero‐mean, Gaussian random field completely specified by its autocovariance function.

Inner-shelf ocean dynamics and seafloor morphologic changes during Hurricane Sandy [PDF]

open access: yesContinental Shelf Research, 2017
Abstract Hurricane Sandy was one of the most destructive hurricanes in US history, making landfall on the New Jersey coast on October 30, 2012. Storm impacts included several barrier island breaches, massive coastal erosion, and flooding. While changes to the subaerial landscape are relatively easily observed, storm-induced changes to the adjacent ...

Pisces IV submersible observations in the epicentral region of the 1929 Grand Banks earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
The PISCES IVsubmersible was used to investigate the upper continental slope around 44 ON, 56 W, near the epicentre of the 1929 Grand Banks earthquake. Four dives in water depths of 800-2000 m were undertaken to observe speci3c features identijied with ...

Submarine depositional terraces at Salina Island (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) and implications on the Late-Quaternary evolution of the insular shelf [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The integrated analysis of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry and single-channel seismic profiles around Salina Island allowed us to characterize the stratigraphic architecture of the insular shelf.

Quantifying the Physical Impact of Bottom Trawling Based on High-Resolution Bathymetric Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
Bottom trawling is one of the most significant anthropogenic pressures on physical seafloor integrity. The objective classification of physical impact is important to monitor ongoing fishing activities and to assess the regeneration of seafloor integrity

Seismic stratigraphy of the Ontong Java Plateau [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The Ontong Java Plateau, a large, deep-water carbonate plateau in the western equatorial Pacific, is an ideal location for studying responses of carbonate sedimentation to the effects of changing paleoceanographic conditions.

Extensional tectonics at oceanic transform plate boundaries: evidence from seafloor morphology

open access: yes, 2022
<p>Oceanic transform faults are among the most prominent morphologic features in ocean basins, offsetting mid-ocean ridges by tens to hundreds of kilometers. Since the inception of plate tectonics, transform faults have been assumed to be simple, two-dimensional strike-slip, conservative plate boundaries, where lithosphere is neither ...

Fresh submarine groundwater discharge offshore Wellington (New Zealand): hydroacoustic characteristics and its influence on seafloor geomorphology

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Fresh submarine groundwater discharge (FSGD) influences the biogeochemistry of coastal areas and can be a proxy for potential untapped resources of offshore freshened groundwater (OFG).

Application of a maximum likelihood processor to acoustic backscatter for the estimation of seafloor roughness parameters [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is used to extract seafloor roughness parameters from records of acoustic backscatter. The method relies on the Helmholtz–Kirchhoff approximation under the assumption of a power‐law roughness spectrum and on the ...

Seafloor morphology and acoustic facies of the George V Land shelf [PDF]

open access: yesDeep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 2003
To study the seafloor morphology on the George V Land shelf, East Antarctica, over 2000km of high-frequency 3.5-27 kHz, echo-sounder data were collected between February and March 2000. The shelf can be divided into four acoustic facies: (a) Type IA-2 seabed is ice-keel turbate found on mid- to outer-shelf banks on seafloor less than 500m deep; (b ...
