Allergen avoidance is the first step in the management. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life can be achieved in the majority of patients by the appropriate use of pharmacotherapy.

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1996Monocyte chemotactic and activating factor/monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCAF/MCP-1), RANTES, and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 alpha are chemokines known to activate basophils (MCAF/RANTES) and eosinophils (RANTES/MIP-1 alpha). IL-8 inhibits MCAF-induced histamine release from basophils.

Pharmacotherapeutic approaches include nonsedative antihistamines, anti-allergic drugs, vasoconstrictors, anticholinergic agents and topical corticosteroids. The choice of treatment depends upon its relative efficacy and safety.
