Seasonal allergic rhinitis is characterized by seasonal rhinorrhea, nasal congestion/stuffiness, nasal and ocular pruritus, and paroxysmal sneezing. Allergen avoidance is the first step in the management. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life can be achieved in the majority of patients by the appropriate use of pharmacotherapy.

Chemokines in seasonal allergic rhinitis
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1996Monocyte chemotactic and activating factor/monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCAF/MCP-1), RANTES, and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 alpha are chemokines known to activate basophils (MCAF/RANTES) and eosinophils (RANTES/MIP-1 alpha). IL-8 inhibits MCAF-induced histamine release from basophils.

Reduced Airway Absorption in Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1997The common notion that increased mucosal absorption characterizes allergic and inflamed airways is poorly supported by physiologic in vivo data. We have now examined whether the airway mucosa of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis develop a change in absorption during their active disease period.
