Prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths in primary school playgrounds in Edo State, southern Nigeria

open access: yesHelminthologia, 2019
Schoolchildren in primary schools are mostly at risk of acquiring soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infections due to their habits (geophagy, onychophagy and playing with barefoot). Profiling soil parasites on school playgrounds is expected to provide an

Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance of Maltose-Negative Staphylococcus aureus in South African Dairy Herds

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2020
Antibiotic resistance has been reported since the 1940s in both human and veterinary medicine. Many years of monitoring milk samples in South Africa led to identification of a novel maltose-negative Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strain, which appears

Demographic Seasonality [PDF]

open access: yesTwin Research and Human Genetics, 2019
AbstractThe seasonality of demographic data has been of great interest. It depends mainly on the climatic conditions, and the findings may vary from study to study. Commonly, the studies are based on monthly data. Thepopulation at riskplays a central role. For births or deaths over short periods, the population at risk is proportional to the lengths of

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Hydrogel Thermostat Inspired by Photoprotective Foliage Using Latent and Radiative Heat Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Guided by Populus alba foliage, this hydrogel latent‐radiative thermostat (LRT) actively balances latent and radiative heat fluxes. An LRT switches solar reflectance, maintains high mid‐IR emissivity, and reversibly evaporates/regenerates water, while titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles toughen the film.
