Development of a seawater battery for deep-water applications

Journal of Power Sources, 1997
Dissolved-oxygen seawater batteries rely on the corrosion of a reactive metal anode and the reduction of oxygen at an inert cathode to generate a potential of about 1 V when immersed in seawater. Because oxygen is not very soluble in seawater, such batteries are characterized by small cathodic current densities and are therefore most suitable for long ...

Copper(II) formate cathodes for seawater batteries

Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, 1985
The preparation of copper(II) formate cathodes, their discharge in magnesium seawater cells, and the discharge reactions are described. This soluble active material could be discharged at high voltages (1.4−1.0 V) with high efficiencies (80–95%) in magnesium cells, when polystyrene solutions were used as the binder to make the cathode plates.

Na-Ion Batteries As a Pathway for Seawater Desalination

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2016
Aqueous Na-ion intercalation compounds have shown promise for hybrid Na-ion batteries (NIBs) used in energy storage applications [Whitacre, Tevar, and Sharma, Electrochem. Comm., 12, 463-466 (2010)]. Because of their stability in aqueous electrolytes and their ability to store Na ions that are prevalent in natural saltwater, Na-ion intercalation ...

A Membrane‐Free Rechargeable Seawater Battery Unlocked by Lattice Engineering

Advanced Materials
AbstractSeawater batteries that directly utilize natural seawater as electrolytes are ideal sustainable aqueous devices with high safety, exceedingly low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the present seawater batteries are either primary batteries or rechargeable half‐seawater/half‐nonaqueous batteries because of the lack of suitable anode
