MarineFlux ICOADS Air‐Sea Fluxes: 1990–2020

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 12, Issue 4, October 2025.
The MarineFlux project derived bulk turbulent heat and momentum fluxes from individual ship and buoy reports available in ICOADS Release 3 for 1990–2020. The fluxes are freely available from an ERDDAP service for use in developing new gridded products and assessing variations in air‐sea energy exchanges. ABSTRACT Bulk turbulent heat and momentum fluxes

The Role of Wind on the Simulated Dispersal and Recruitment of a Commercially Important Hawaiʻi Bottomfish

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 34, Issue 4, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Variability in larval transport has long been hypothesized to drive recruitment fluctuations in fishes, yet evidence for these hypotheses is often lacking. Further, the origins of many of these hypotheses come from temperate to subpolar regions, leaving such questions largely underexplored for other regions, especially the tropics.

Building up or spreading out? Typologies of urban growth across 478 cities of 1 million+

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2019
Urban form in both two- (2D) and three-dimensions (3D) has significant impacts on local and global environments. Here we developed the largest global dataset characterizing 2D and 3D urban growth for 478 cities with populations of one million or larger ...

An Algorithm to Develop a Satellite‐Based Atmospheric River Database

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 5, 16 March 2025.
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) feature transient filaments of enhanced moisture transport. Given their significant influence on regional weather extremes and global hydrological cycle, there have been extensive AR studies based on reanalyses or in‐situ measurements.

GRIDDED SURFACE WIND-STRESS PRODUCT OVER THE WORLD OCEAN CONSTRUCTED BY SATELLITE SCATTEROMETER DATA AND ITS COMPARISON WITH NWP PRODUCTS

open access: yesGayana, 2004
Products of gridded surface wind and wind-stress vectors over the world ocean are constructed by satellite scatterometer (ERS-1/2 and Qscat/SeaWinds) data with highly temporal and spatial resolutions.

Estimating Wind Direction and Wind Speed Over Lakes With Surface Water Ocean Topography and Sentinel‐1 Satellite Observations

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Wind at the water‐air interface is an important driver of hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in lakes. Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is commonly used over the ocean to retrieve wind fields using backscatter coefficients which are sensitive to wind‐driven surface water roughness; however, its application to lakes has been ...

Beyond Accretion Limits: The Rise of Pulsating Gems

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 346, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT The discovery of several ultraluminous X‐ray sources exhibiting fast and rapidly evolving X‐ray pulsations unequivocally associates these sources with accreting neutron stars orbiting relatively massive companion stars (> 8M ⊙$$ {}_{\odot } $$).

A Rare Tropical Cyclone Associated With Southwest Monsoon Over the Northern Part of the South China Sea—Tropical Storm Maliksi

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 11, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract This study examines the characteristics and development of Tropical Storm Maliksi, which is a special case of tropical cyclone developed in the northwestern part of the South China Sea during a southwest monsoon outbreak. Detailed analyses were conducted using observational data and forecast products. Surface observations, radar wind profilers,

Probing extreme black‐hole outflows on short timescales via high spectral‐resolution x‐ray imagers

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 6-7, July-August 2024.
Abstract We investigate outflows and the physics of super‐Eddington versus sub‐Eddington regimes in black hole systems. Our focus is on prospective science using next‐generation high‐resolution soft x‐ray instruments. We highlight the properties of black hole ultraluminous x‐ray source (ULX) systems in particular. Owing to scale invariance in accreting

CERRA, the Copernicus European Regional Reanalysis system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 150, Issue 763, Page 3385-3411, July 2024 Part B.
A high‐resolution, 5.5 km, regional reanalysis has been produced for a domain covering the whole of Europe from 1984 to 2021 together with a 10‐member ensemble run at 11‐km resolution as well as an offline surface analysis. The reanalyses and re‐forecasts from CERRA show an added value compared to the global reanalyses for almost all variables at the ...
