Human sebum contains squalene, wax esters, triglycerides, cholesterol esters, and possibly free cholesterol. The fatty acids of the ester lipids include species with chain branching or with unusual double-bond positions. The alcohol moieties of the wax esters contain unusual chain types similar to those of the fatty acids.

A sebaceous gland tumor of the ovary was detected in a 60-year-old woman who underwent right salpingo-oophorectomy for a right ovarian cyst. The cyst was unilocular, weighed 820 g, and was filled with sebaceous material containing a few hair shafts.

Pathology of intraoral sebaceous glands

Large clinical studies have shown that intraoral sebaceous glands are present in 70 to 95% of the population. In many individuals these small white to yellow macules and papules are so numerous that they dominate the buccal mucosa. Despite their prevalence, pathological changes of these glands are considered uncommon.
