Tell Basta During the Second Intermediate Period

Excavations of the Egyptian Antiquities Organisation at Tell Basta under Shafik Farid and Ahmed el-Sawi and of the University of Zagazig under Mohamed Bakr revealed several tombs from the Second Intermediate Period (SIP). These, however, remained unpublished or were not recognized as such.

The Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period

The ancient Egyptians of later times saw the Middle Kingdom as their classical period. Its language was used in temple and tomb inscriptions until the Roman Period, and its literature was still read and copied hundreds years after it was written. Its sculpture was the prototype for that of the Late Period, more than a thousand years later.

The Second Intermediate Period of ancient Egypt was the second of three eras of political fragmentation in pharaonic history, traditionally spanning from approximately 1773 to 1550 bce.
