Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Classification of second-order conformally-superintegrable systems

open access: yes, 2014
Over the last half century the study of superintegrable systems has established itself as an interesting subject with connections to some of the earliest known dynamical systems in mathematical-physics.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Finite-difference solutions of tenth-order boundary-value problems

open access: yes, 1994
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. In this thesis finite difference methods are used to obtain numerical solutions for a class of high-order ordinary differential equations with applications ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Controllability of matrix second order systems: A trigonometric matrix approach

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2007
Many of the real life problems are modelled as Matrix Second Order Systems, (refer Wu and Duan [19], Hughes and Skelton [10]). Necessary and sufficient condition for controllability of Matrix Second Order Linear (MSOL) Systems has been established by

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Homoclinic solutions for a class of second order non-autonomous systems

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2009
This article concerns the existence of homoclinic solutions for the second order non-autonomous system $$ ddot q+A dot q-L(t)q+W_{q}(t,q)=0, $$ where $A$ is a skew-symmetric constant matrix, $L(t)$ is a symmetric positive definite matrix depending ...

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.
