Physical Review Letters, 1986Becchi-Rouet-Stora invariance is used to second quantize the free superstring covariantly in the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond formalism. The massless sector is shown to be the gauge-fixed supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. A method to find a gauge-covariant local formulation is also discussed.

In this chapter we describe a powerful technique used in the analysis of quantum many-body systems – the method of second quantization. In rough terms, it allows one, instead of working with a fixed number of particles, to let the number of particles fluctuate, while keeping the average number fixed.
