A Secondary Flow Calculation Method for Single-Stage Axial Transonic Flow Compressors, Including Shock-Secondary Flow Interaction

open access: yesJournal of Turbomachinery, 1989
A secondary flow calculation method is presented, which makes use of the meridional vorticity transport equation. Circumferential mean flow quantities are calculated using an inverse procedure. The method makes use of the mean kinetic energy integral equation and calculates simultaneously hub and tip secondary flow development.

Secondary Flows in Axial Turbines—A Review

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2001
Abstract: An important problem that arises in the design and the performance of axial flow turbines is the understanding, analysis, prediction and control of secondary flows. Sieverding1 has given a review of secondary flow literature, covering up to 1985.

Adaptation of secondary flow in nearly-horizontal flow

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 1986
To implement the generation and decay of secondary flow in steady or quasi-steady nearly-horizontal flow models an approximative method is proposed which takes account of the convection of momentum...

On Transverse Secondary Flows in Wave Channels

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1983
The viscous boundary layer analysis for the sidewalls of a wave tank is presented for the case of two-dimensional waves of small amplitude traveling along the channel length. The second-order transverse streaming motion induced in the interior of the channel by the sidewall layers is determined. The calculations extend the work of Mei and Liu [1] which

Flow Visualization Evaluation of Secondary Flow in a Centrifugal Blood Pump

ASAIO Journal, 1993
To design a less hemolytic and more antithrombogenic centrifugal blood pump, secondary flow, i.e., vortex and turbulent flow, must be properly controlled. An irregular stream pattern is a cause of hemolysis, and good wash-out around the shaft minimizes thrombus formation. In this study, flow visualization methods were applied to evaluate secondary flow

Secondary flow due to Alfvén waves

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1977
Large (gigajoule) amounts of energy can in principle be stored as kinetic energy in liquid metal circulating round a torus and can be extracted at the gigawatt level by Alfvén waves propagating along an imposed axial field. A major limitation on the energy that may be so stored is the disruption of these primary Alfvén waves by secondary flows in ...

The Secondary Flow About Struts and Airfoils

Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1954
The flow about a strut when the approaching velocity varies in the spanwise direction has been examined theoretically and experimentally. The theory supposes that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and that the flow is a small disturbance of the two-dimensional potential pattern appropriate to the profile.
