The vertical gash on a slope visible from afar (see Chap. 4 and Fig. 15.1) is the beginning of a long process which commences with bare soil, in this case a narrow landslip, and should eventually result in a forest indistinguishable from the surrounding forest.

Mapping secondary tropical forest and forest age from SPOT HRV data
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1999Accurate mapping of secondary forest and the age of these forests is critical to assess the carbon budget in tropical regions accurately. Using SPOT HRV (High Resolution Visible) data, techniques were developed and tested to discriminate primary forest, secondary forest and deforested areas on a study site in Rondonia, Brazil.

Natural Regeneration and Secondary Forests
2010The easiest way of reforesting degraded lands is to take advantage of the capacity of many disturbed areas to recover unaided. The forests originating in this way are often referred to as secondary forests and these now cover large areas across the Asia-Pacific region.

Forest communities in high Andean secondary forests (Azuay, Ecuador)
2017In the Andean mountains of southern Ecuador there are areas occupied by high Andean secondary forests as a consequence of anthropic activities. Here we identify different secondary forest communities located over 2900 m a.s.l, based on its floristic similarity.

Hyperdominance and rarity in Amazonian secondary forests
Abstract Recent studies have shown that a few tree species dominate abundance and carbon storage in undisturbed Amazonian forests. However, this pattern remains poorly understood in forests regrowing after deforestation.Fernando Elias +9 more
