Secondary succession in two subtropical forests
Plant Ecology, 1999We studied secondary succession in two subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests near Shanghai, China that had been harvested 2–60 years earlier. Shrubs were thinned in one of the forests to about 60% of their original density for the first 20 years after harvesting. The other was not disturbed after harvesting. Five stands were sampled in each forest.

Creating a Successful Secondary School
NASSP Bulletin, 1986There are no shortcuts to creating and maintaining an effective school. The necessary ingredients—as identified in a study of schools recognized for excellence—include clear goals, high expectations, and hard work.

Secondary succession impairment in restored mangroves
Wetlands Ecology and Management, 2012In this work it was hypothesized that secondary succession on sites that have been managed by single planting of mangrove species is compromised by residual stressors, which could reduce the ecosystem’s structural development and lower its functions. Forest structure and environmental characteristics of three planted mangrove stands are compared with ...

The Ecology of Secondary Succession
Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 1974Rather than review the ample and expanding literature of succession, as Drury & Nisbet (12) have lately and nobly done, I propose to cover some recent developments in population biology that have profound implications for theories and patterns of secondary succession.

Implications of afforestation vs. secondary succession for soil properties under a semiarid climate.
Science of the Total Environment, 2019Afforestation or secondary succession after cropland abandonment are different strategies to restore soil ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration.

Cleft Width and Secondary Alveolar Bone Graft Success
The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, 1995Fifty-six cleft sites were reviewed prior to alveolar bone grafting and subsequently evaluated for graft success using study models, periapical and occlusal radiographs from the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. All patients in this sample had presurgical orthodontics to expand and align the maxillary arch prior to alveolar bone grafting.

Course of Secondary Succession
1991The initiation of succession in abandoned meadows and the course of its first phases are influenced by the floristic richness and diversity of the phytocoenosis Cirsietum rivularis. A diagram of the carr sere (Circaeo-Alnetum) has been presented in Figure 2.5, and the species taking part in the succession have been listed in Table 2.5.

Plant Strategies in Secondary Successions
1991In general, the participation of life strategies changes markedly with succession, this being in agreement with the theory of plant life strategies (Grime 1979, MacMahon 1980). Grime’s (1979) concept was applied in the classification of species. The features of plants which served as a basis for classification of the particular species according to ...
