Sparse Signals in the Cross‐Section of Returns

open access: yesJournal of Finance, 2018
This paper uses a penalized regression known as the LASSO to identify rare, short-lived, “sparse” signals in the cross-section of returns. The LASSO boosts out-of-sample predictability in one-minute returns by 23% relative to OLS regressions. This out-of-

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

On the number of diamonds in the subgroup lattice of a finite abelian group

open access: yesAnalele Stiintifice ale Universitatii Ovidius Constanta: Seria Matematica, 2016
The main goal of the current paper is to determine the total number of diamonds in the subgroup lattice of a finite abelian group. This counting problem is reduced to finite p-groups. Explicit formulas are obtained in some particular cases.

Comparing Cross-Section and Time-Series Factor Models

open access: yesThe Review of financial studies, 2019
We use the cross-section regression approach of Fama and MacBeth (1973) to construct cross-section factors corresponding to the time-series factors of Fama and French (2015).

Mechanisms of IgE‐mediated food allergy and the role of allergen‐specific B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Food allergy arises when allergen‐specific B cells preferentially produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against harmless foods. This article explains the mechanisms driving IgE‐mediated reactions, highlights the central role of these B cells, and discusses how natural tolerance (NT) and oral immunotherapy (OIT) can reshape allergic immune responses.

Auroral zone absorption of radio waves transmitted via the ionosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 1955
A discussion of the design for a new antenna system for the transmitter stations is presented together with the measurements and power computation made on the old and new antennas.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Uniqueness on the Class of Odd-Dimensional Starlike Obstacles with Cross Section Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We determine the uniqueness on starlike obstacles by using the cross section data. We see cross section data as spectral measure in polar coordinate at far field. Cross section scattering data suffice to give the local behavior of the wave trace.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Incentive-Based Instruments for Water Management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This report provides a synthesis review of a set of incentive-based instruments that have been employed to varying degrees around the world. It is part of an effort by The Rockefeller Foundation to improve understanding of both the potential of these ...
