Limited biomass recovery from gold mining in Amazonian forests
To achieve large‐scale restoration targets, Guyana and other Amazonian countries will be challenged to remediate previously mined lands. The recovery process is highly dependent on nitrogen availability rather than mercury contamination, affecting woody biomass regrowth.

Can avian functional traits predict cultural ecosystem services?
Abstract The functional trait diversity of species assemblages can predict the provision of ecosystem services such as pollination and carbon sequestration, but it is unclear whether the same trait‐based framework can be applied to identify the factors that underpin cultural ecosystem services and disservices. To explore the relationship between traits

We explored the allocation strategies of N and P in leaves and fine roots (metabolic organs) and, in stems and coarse roots (woody organs) of nine dominant tree species in secondary tropical dry forests using scaling analysis. The scaling relationships of P versus N concentrations in non‐leaf organs were isometric across secondary succession and ...

Abstract In the armed conflict between Kashmiri militancy and the Indian state forces, Kashmiri women have been relentless victims of abduction, rape, molestation, and cruel objectification by the militaristic patriarchs of both sides. In the context of the state's unaccountability, the rebuttal of justice is horrific in Kashmir.

International Biological Flora: Ceratonia siliqua
The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) has a long traditional history in Mediterranean cultures providing food for humans and domestic animals. Its remarkable tolerance of drought, salt and fire, with an ability to thrive in poor, dry soils, makes it ideal for a warming Mediterranean climate.

Tropical forest above‐ground productivity is maintained by nutrients cycled in litter
The maintenance of highly productive lowland tropical forests on infertile soils is often attributed to nutrient cycling via litterfall. Almost 40 years after this theory was first proposed, our large‐scale field experiment demonstrates that tree growth and litter production decline in response to long‐term litter removal, providing the first empirical

Our results highlight the importance of remnant native forest to provide multiple ecosystem functions and the potential to restore them and complement these uses with sustainable agriculture. By merging landscape and ecosystem approaches we provide specific numbers regarding the proportion that each land use should have in order to maximise ...

By increasing the representation of exceptional species in reforestation efforts, we could potentially boost long‐term carbon storage in reforestation projects focussed on carbon sequestration. However, our approach is not a substitute for protecting existing old primary forests and reforested lands plus reducing deforestation and emissions.
