Topical application of the cold‐mimetic l‐menthol decreases wheel running without affecting the beneficial effects of voluntary exercise in mice

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 1, Page 111-123, 1 January 2026.
Abstract Topical application of l‐menthol, a pharmacological cold‐mimetic and agonist of the cold‐sensing receptor TRPM8 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8), has been shown to stimulate brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and reduce weight gain in both obese and lean male mice, without affecting energy intake.

Volitional exercise elicits physiological and molecular improvements in the severe D2.mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 2, Page 849-867, 15 January 2026.
Abstract figure legend This study investigated the effects of volitional exercise on muscle health in the more severe D2.mdx model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We showed that 8–10 weeks of a relatively high volume of voluntary wheel running (VWR) in D2.mdx animals augmented select muscle mass and normalized ex vivo muscle force compared to ...

Beyond Oxygen Fugacity: A Compositional Metric to Probe Earth's Redox Structure

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 24, 28 December 2025.
Abstract We quantify the redox capacity (dO2) by redox titration—defined as the quantity of oxygen required to fully oxidize a sample—for rocks spanning Earth's upper mantle to surface sediments. The values span three orders of magnitude, with the greatest variability in metamorphic and surface rocks that host both highly reduced (rich in carbon and ...

Regional Hotspots of Lake Evaporation Changes Driven by Surface Energy Balance and Climate Interactions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 24, 28 December 2025.
Abstract Lakes are a critical component of the terrestrial hydrological cycle, yet their sensitivity to future climate warming—especially in terms of evaporation (E $E$)—remains insufficiently understood. Here, we use the Lake, Ice, Snow, and Sediment Simulator within the Community Land Model to project the responses of global lake E $E$ to a warming ...
