Timescales for the development of methanogenesis and free gas layers in recently-deposited sediments of Arkona Basin (Baltic Sea) [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2012
Arkona Basin (southwestern Baltic Sea) is a seasonally-hypoxic basin characterized by the presence of free methane gas in its youngest organic-rich muddy stratum.

Osteohistological evidence for terrestrial adaptation and an extended growth period in mekosuchine crocodylians and its potential role in their extinction

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The Australasian crocodylian fossil record is dominated by the extinct endemic clade Mekosuchinae, with known members spanning the Eocene‐to‐Holocene. This diverse clade exhibited high morphological disparity, from early members superficially similar to Crocodylus, to more terrestrial forms later in the clade's evolutionary history.

Geochemical Split Among the Suspended and Mud Sediments in the Nethravati River: Insights to Compositional Similarity of Peninsular Gneiss and the Deccan Basalt Derived Sediments, and Its Implications on Tracing the Provenance in the Indian Ocean

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry of sediments from a tropical mountain river is investigated to understand the behavior of chemical elements during weathering and transportation in a Peninsular Gneissic terrain.

Deciphering the Palimpsest: Chronological Uncertainty and the Interpretation of Mining Landscapes at Písečný vrch (Czech Republic)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We investigated the Písečný vrch (Czech Republic), a site exploited for quartz mining in both prehistoric times and the 20th century. Due to their morphological similarity across all mining periods, the differentiation between pits with archaeological potential and recent ones is challenging.

Uptake of PCBs into sediment dwellers and trophic transfer in relation to sediment conditions in the Salish Sea

open access: yesFACETS, 2022
We examined uptake of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into various marine sediment feeders relative to physical and geochemical factors and transfer to higher trophic levels.

Green and sustainable synthesis of magnetite from copper slag via citrate complexation for methylene blue dye removal from water

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract This study proposes a novel, green, and sustainable method for synthesizing magnetic iron oxides from metallurgical copper slag (CS), leveraging its iron content as a valuable resource. Iron was extracted via acid leaching using edible citric acid (ECA), forming a citrate–iron complex (CSL), which was subsequently thermally decomposed at 300°C

Porewater Geochemical Assessment of Seismic Indications for Gas Hydrate Presence and Absence: Mahia Slope, East of New Zealand’s North Island

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
We compare sediment vertical methane flux off the Mahia Peninsula, on the Hikurangi Margin, east of New Zealand’s North Island, with a combination of geochemical, multichannel seismic and sub-bottom profiler data.

Impact of cable bacteria on sedimentary iron and manganese dynamics in a seasonally-hypoxic marine basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cable bacteria have recently been identified in various sedimentary marine settings worldwide. These filamentous microbes mediate electrogenic sulphur oxidation (e-SOx) over centimetre-scale distances, leading to a distinct separation of oxygen- and ...

Fracture evolution of a thick soft protection layer and the water inrush mechanism in overburden under longwall mining

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Through shear–tensile creep tests and viscoelastic modeling, the fracture evolution of thick soft protective layers is clarified. Results show thickness‐dependent rheological failure modes that govern four types of roof water inrush, providing a mechanism‐based framework for hazard prediction and control. Abstract In the Jurassic coal‐bearing strata of

Mechanistic insights across curing regimes for enzymatic and biopolymer‐optimized reinforcement in rock masses

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study examines the effects of curing temperature on the mechanical behavior of underground rock masses treated with enzyme‐induced calcite precipitation (EICP) and an innovative biopolymer‐modified EICP (BP‐EICP). Abstract Biocementation is an innovative and sustainable technique for reinforcing weak and weathered rock masses in natural and ...
