The role of sediments as a source of metals in river catchments
Chemosphere, 2012Aquatic sediments are a known source of pollutants, but their impact on the quality of overlying waters is not easily quantified. Sediments are generally considered to behave as a sink for pollutants such as heavy metals in the aquatic environment, frequently acting as a source for their presence in waters, with implications for catchment management ...

Sediment source fingerprinting and the temporal variability of source contributions
Journal of Environmental Management, 2023Sediment source fingerprinting has been progressively developed and refined over the past 40 years or more and now represents a widely used and valuable technique, with important practical applications. However, relatively little attention has been given to the target samples and the extent to which they are able to provide meaningful information on ...

Photochemical Source of Metals for Sediments
Environmental Science & Technology, 2006A mass budget study of major in-lake Al fluxes, palaeolimnological data on a >10,000 year old sediment record, and in situ photochemical experiments performed at Plesné Lake (Czech Republic) suggest that photochemical liberation of organically bound aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) by solar radiation is a significant natural source of their ionic species ...

Sediments as a source for contaminants?
Hydrobiologia, 1987This review article covers the processes affecting trace metals in deposited sediments. The sediment-water system can be divided in three parts: the oxic layer, the anoxic layer and the oxic-anoxic interface. Available data show that trace metals like Cu, Zn and Cd occur as sulphides in marine and estuarine anoxic sediments.

The use of sediment color as a fingerprint property to determine sediment sources is an emerging technique that can provide a rapid and inexpensive means of investigating sediment sources. The present study aims to test the feasibility of color fingerprint properties to apportion sediment sources within the South Tobacco Creek Watershed (74 km) in ...

This section is dedicated to the contribution of geomorphic processes in dislocation, setting in motion and removal of rock particles from the drainage system in Romania. The total volume of eroded material amounts to ca. 126 Mt/year for the entire territory of Romania.

Source identification for suspended sediments
Journal of Hydrology, 1980Abstract Studies of suspended sediment in the 170-km 2 River Ystwyth catchment (mid-Wales) for 1973–1975 suggest two complementary methods of identifying their sources. The colour of yielded sediments, and the details of sediment-discharge relationships with respect to time, allow a separation into “channel” and “non-channel” sources.

Sediments as sources of DDT and PCB
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 1977Abstract Despite major decreases in DDT and PCB emissions over a three year period by the dominant discharger to a coastal marine site, only minor (and very similar) decreases were observed in concentrations of these pollutants in bottom sediments and flatfish from the outfall monitoring zone.

Chapter IV. Sediment Sources and Sediment Yields
Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1970Methods and procedures are analyzed for determining erosion rates from water-borne sediments, along with sediment yield or deposition rates at locations downstream from the erosion source. Emphasis is placed on the erosion types and processes which cause the most engineering problems, either by virtue of the large sediment quantities involved or by the

Sources and Distribution of Sediments
2006The uplift of rocks above sea level on the Earth’s surface over geological time, produces rock material that can be altered into soils and sediments by weathering processes. Over geological time, a fraction of sediments can be sequestered for storage in the ocean basins—with most of it stored in the coastal margin.
