Primary succession in an Atlantic salt marsh: From intertidal flats to mid‐marsh platform in 35 years

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 8, Page 2909-2921, August 2021., 2021
Facilitation plays a central role in saltmarsh development in this study of primary succession. We chronicle changes in the sedimentary environment, geomorphology and plant colonisation over 35 years, as intertidal flats were transformed into a mid‐marsh platform.

Aspectos ecológicos da determinação sexual em tartarugas Ecological aspects of turtle sex determination

open access: yesActa Amazonica, 2009
Os aspectos ecológicos relacionados à reprodução das tartarugas e de outros répteis que apresentam determinação sexual dependente da temperatura de incubação desempenham um papel crucial no equilíbrio das populações.

Acute and chronic toxicity of sediment samples from Guanabara Bay (RJ) during the rainy period

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2010
Guanabara Bay is a marine-estuarine environment of high ecological and socio-economic importance, subject to a variety of environmental impacts. Sediment is the eventual repository for most substances introduced into water bodies and may, therefore ...

open access: yesScientia Agricola, 2009
The use of sewage sludge in agricultural soils as a macro and micronutrient source and as a soil conditioner has been one of the alternatives for its disposal. However, sewage sludge contains trace metals, which are potential sources of pollution.

Evaluation of geochemical data by two different XRF spectrometers in sediments from the Santiaguillo Basin (state of Durango, Mexico)

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2017
La espectrometría de Fluorescencia de Rayos-X (FRX) es uno de los métodos más usados para medir datos geoquímicos y aplica técnicas tanto destructivas como no destructivas en la preparación de muestras.

Spatial distribution of organic matter in the surface sediments of Ubatuba Bay (Southeastern - Brazil)

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2003
Analyses of organic matter content, organic carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and granulometric variables were performed on 101 surface sediment samples from Ubatuba Bay in order to investigate the spatial distribution of organic matter, its origin and the ...

Geological control of Podocnemis expansa and Podocnemis unifilis nesting areas in Rio Javaés, Bananal Island, Brazil Controle geológico das áreas de nidificação de Podocnemis expansa e Podocnemis unifilis no Rio Javaés, Ilha do Bananal, Brasil

open access: yesActa Amazonica, 2003
The distribution of the nests of Podocnemis expansa (Amazon turtle) and Podocnemis unifilis (yellow-spotted side neck turtle) along the point bars of the Javaés River in Bananal Island, demonstrates a clear preference of these chelonians for ...

Multiple trait dimensions mediate stress gradient effects on plant biomass allocation, with implications for coastal ecosystem services

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 108, Issue 4, Page 1227-1240, July 2020., 2020
Our focal saltmarsh grass expressed conservative leaf traits and invested more in below‐ground biomass under high salinity. Yet, it was still able to express a high proportion of coarse roots and produce greater above‐ground biomass under high redox.

Micro‐by‐micro interactions: How microorganisms influence the fate of marine microplastics

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 18-36, February 2020., 2020
Abstract Microorganisms drive the biogeochemical cycles that link abiotic and biotic processes in the aqueous environment and are intricately associated with plastic debris. The presence of microplastics in water and sediment introduces new concerns as small particle size allows for increased pathways of microplastics in the food web and element cycles.
