Effect of pistil age on pollen tube growth, fruit development and seed set in Cucurbita pepo L.

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2014
The effects of pistil age on pollen tube growth, fruit development and seed set were studied in Cucurbita pepo L., the flower of which opens for only six hours. Stigma receptivity lasts four days, from one day before until two days after anthesis.

OsMND1 regulates early meiosis and improves the seed set rate in polyploid rice

open access: yesPlant growth regulation (Print), 2019
The meiotic processes of most polyploid rice (Oryza sativa) are genetically abnormal, leading to low pollen fertility, which results in low seed set rates.

Influence of plant reproductive systems on the evolution of hummingbird pollination

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2022
Many hummingbird‐pollinated plant species evolved from bee‐pollinated ancestors independently in many different habitats in North and South America. The mechanisms leading to these transitions are not completely understood.

The Minimal Seed Set Problem

open access: yesProceedings of the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling, 2011
This paper defines and studies a new, interesting, and challenging benchmark problem that originates in systems biology. The minimal seed-set problem is defined as follows: given a description of the metabolic reactions of an organism, characterize the minimal set of nutrients with which it could synthesize all nutrients it is capable ...

Fitness of natural willow hybrids in a pioneer mosaic hybrid zone

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2016
Hybrid fitness is an important parameter to predict the evolutionary consequences of a hybridization event and to characterize hybrid zones. We studied fitness parameters of F1 and later‐generation hybrids between the lowland species Salix purpurea and ...

Comparative reproduction mechanisms of three species of Ocimum L. (Lamiaceae)

open access: yesActa Agrobotanica, 2016
Ocimum species have a combination of reproductive system which varies with the locality and cultivar. We have studied here the reproductive mechanisms of five variants of three Ocimum species in Nigeria, namely: Ocimum canum Sims., O. basilicum L., and O.

An information-bearing seed for nucleating algorithmic self-assembly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Self-assembly creates natural mineral, chemical, and biological structures of great complexity. Often, the same starting materials have the potential to form an infinite variety of distinct structures; information in a seed molecule can determine which ...

The sufficient minimal set of miRNA seed types [PDF]

open access: yesBioinformatics, 2011
Abstract Motivation: Pairing between the target sequence and the 6–8 nt long seed sequence of the miRNA presents the most important feature for miRNA target site prediction. Novel high-throughput technologies such as Argonaute HITS-CLIP afford meanwhile a detailed study of miRNA:mRNA duplices.

Molecular mechanisms controlling seed set in cereal crop species under stress and non-stress conditions

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2018
Maximizing seed yield is the ultimate breeding goal in important cereal crop species. Seed set is a key developmental stage in the process of seed formation, which determines grain number, seed mass, and realized yield potential, and can be severely ...
