Control of seed size by jasmonate [PDF]
Seed size, an important agronomic trait determining crop yield, is regulated by multiple plant hormones. Jasmonate (JA) is a key phytohormone required for various plant defenses and diverse developmental processes. Here, we defined an essential role for JA in control of seed size.

The evolution of rewards: seed dispersal, seed size and elaiosome size [PDF]
SummaryWe examine the relationship between the reward offered to ants to disperse seeds (elaiosome size) and seed size, and the possible mechanisms that may generate this relationship in Australian plant species. We used seed and elaiosome sizes from our own data set containing 87Acaciaspecies, supplemented with 22 species from a previously published ...

AbstractPremiseDoes the seed size–seed number allocation trade‐off model apply to long‐term persistent soil seed banks? This trade‐off between seed size versus number of seeds produced is usually applied at a single population on an annual basis. Our question is how this model might apply to close relatives that produce dormant seed forming long‐term ...

Networks controlling seed size in Arabidopsis [PDF]
Key message: Overview of seed size control. Human and livestock nutrition is largely based on calories derived from seeds, in particular cereals and legumes. Unveiling the control of seed size is therefore of remarkable importance in the frame of developing new strategies for crop improvement.

Seed size selection by olive baboons
Primates, 2008Seed size is an important plant fitness trait that can influence several steps between fruiting and the establishment of a plant's offspring. Seed size varies considerably within many plant species, yet the relevance of the trait for intra-specific fruit choice by primates has received little attention.

Improved phylogenies and the accumulation of broad comparative data sets have opened the way for phylogenetic analyses to trace trait evolution in major groups of organisms. We arrayed seed mass data for 12,987 species on the seed plant phylogeny and show the history of seed size from the emergence of the angiosperms through to the present day.

Comparative evolutionary ecology of seed size
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1992A seedling's chances of establishing successfully are likely to be affected by the quantity of metabolic reserves in the seed. Seed size is thought to evolve as a compromise between producing numerous smaller seeds, each with few resources, and fewer larger seeds, each with more resources.
