Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Classification of West Indian gherkin seeds vigor by respiratory activity

open access: yesRevista Ciência Agronômica
Seed companies increasingly need to obtain rapid and reliable results on seed quality. In this context, this study aimed at verifying the efficiency of CO2 measurement for classifying West Indian gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) seed vigor, using three seed ...

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Effects of cold water, mechanical and acid scarifications on germination and seedling growth of pre-chilled seeds of Leucaena leucocephala [PDF]

open access: yes
-The effects of pre-chilling on seed germination and seedling growth of Leucaena leucocephala were examined, alone and combined with soaking in cold water, clipping and immersing in concentrated sulfuric acid.

Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Controlled deterioration test and use of the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS ® ) to evaluate the physiological potential of crambe seeds

open access: yesJournal of Seed Science
: Vigor tests are important tools for verifying the physiological potential of seed lots; however, various aspects can interfere in the consistency of the test results. The search for less subjective procedures has drawn the interest of researchers.

Influence of microbial inoculation on seedling vigor and enzyme activities of Malaysian upland rice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We evaluated the effects of inoculating upland rice seeds with PPGR (plant promoting growth rhizobacteria) inoculants on seedling establishment and enzymatic activity in particular amylase and protease activity during germination time. Through this study,

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Copper Nanocrystallization in Anodic Oxide Films of Ti–Cu‐Based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on the Corrosion Resistance and Cytocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Viktoriia Shtefan, Thorgund Nemec, Ute Hempel, Annett Gebert and coworkers demonstrate that anodic treatment of Ti–Cu‐based metallic glass in a nontoxic pyrophosphate electrolyte forms a protective bilayered Ti/Zr‐oxide film enriched with Cu nanocrystals.
