SummaryThe factors which cause the death of seedlings were examined and an attempt was made to determine the selective forces to which they are subjected in the field. After briefly dealing with the difficulties of defining a seedling, I examine a few cases from the recent literature in which the causes of seedling mortality are identified and ...

Control of Bacterial Seedling Rot and Seedling Blight of Rice by Bacteriophage [PDF]
In Japan, rice seed are immersed in pesticide solutions to prevent seedborne diseases that attack greenhouse seedlings. However, disposal of large quantities of waste pesticide solutions after treatment is costly. As an alternative treatment, bacteriophages (phages) that are highly specific to the target bacteria are considered as potential biocontrol

Nursery location and potassium enrichment in Aleppo pine stock 1. Effect on nursery culture, growth, allometry and seedling quality [PDF]
There is a need for a better understanding of the primary role of macronutrients in Aleppo pine stock quality and for producing larger nutrient-loaded stock, which may be challenging for inland nurseries.

Invertases in Oat Seedlings [PDF]
The soluble invertase activity in etiolated Avena seedlings was highest at the apex of the coleoptile and much lower in the primary leaf, mesocotyl, and root. The activity in all parts of the seedling consisted of two invertases (I and II) which were separated by chromatography on diethylaminoethylcellulose. Both enzymes appeared to be acid invertases,

This paper presents an agar medium with a phosphorescent grid pattern that measures the stress distribution generated by growing plant roots. Using phosphorescence, the system optically separates the grid pattern from the root and extracts the grid deformation.

A Rare Allele of ST5 From Wild Rice Enhances Salt Tolerance in Rice
A novel salt‐tolerance gene ST5W, characterized by a unique 36‐bp promoter insertion, is found exclusively in a small subset of Oryza rufipogon and is absent in cultivated rice. Field trials confirm ST5W significantly enhances rice yield across diverse genetic backgrounds under saline conditions.
