Measuring conditional segregation: methods and empirical examples [PDF]

open access: yes
In empirical studies of segregation it is often desirable to quantify segregation that cannot be explained by underlying characteristics. To this end, we propose a fully non-parametric method for accounting for covariates in any measure of segregation ...

Corrosion and Process Analysis of a Preoxidized MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode in Laboratory‐Scale Na‐Cryolite Molten Salt Electrolysis of Aluminum at 1000°C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
EDX elemental map of the pre‐oxidized MgO–steel cermet anode cross section after electrolysis. The development of inert anodes for aluminum electrolysis remains challenging due to the high corrosivity of cryolite‐based melts at 950°C–1000°C. This study investigates the corrosion and process behavior of a carbon‐free MgO–steel cermet anode derived from ...

Understanding sentiment toward racial unrest through temporal and geographic lenses: a multilevel-analysis across metropolitan areas in the United States

open access: yesFrontiers in Communication
Racial unrest has long been a salient social issue in the United States. Time and space provide essential contexts for the emergence and evolution of racial unrest.

Unraveling the Effect of Tramp Elements on Phase Transformations in Steels by Combining CALPHAD Modeling and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how tramp elements from increased scrap usage influence phase transformations in low‐alloyed steel. Combining dilatometry and microscopy reveal that tramp elements delay transformations, reduce critical cooling rates and increase hardenability.

Da marginalidade à segregação: contribuições de uma teoria urbana crítica

open access: yesEconomía, Sociedad y Territorio, 2017
Several interpretations of the dynamics of globalization have brought urban issues into the spotlight. Since the conditions of creation of urban society are tied predominantly to extra-regional factors, this process may potentially destroy the local ...

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Afro-Asian Intimacies: Cross-Pollination and the Persistence of Anti-Blackness in Chinese Culture

open access: yesGenealogy
America’s racial history is largely siloed and compartmentalized, separating minority group experiences as if they were neat rows of isolated, discernable categories.

Occupational segregation of immigrant women in Spain [PDF]

open access: yes
The aim of this paper is to analyze occupational segregation in the Spanish labor market from a gender and an immigration perspective. In doing so, several local and overall segregation measures are used. Our results suggest that immigrant women in Spain

Characterization of Macro/Microstructure and Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Cladding

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cladding is a proven method that boosts the surface qualities of mechanical parts by applying a layer of more durable material over a base substrate. This work responds to the needs of offshore and pressure vessels sectors by focusing on cladding a super austenitic steel onto low‐carbon steel through gas tungsten arc welding.

Measuring Segregation [PDF]

open access: yes
We propose a set of axioms for the measurement of school-based segregation with any number of ethnic groups. These axioms are motivated by two criteria. The first is evenness: how much do ethnic groups’ distributions across schools differ?
