Instability mechanism and failure characteristics of underground cavern in block system under the action of seismic waves

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Seismic waves with tensile stress, high amplitude, and low frequency are most likely to trigger block instability and sliding. Blocks with a single sliding surface are more prone to movement than those with multiple constraints, and roof‐positioned blocks are especially vulnerable to slide.

Sensitivity of seismically cued antineutrino detectors to nuclear explosions

open access: yes, 2018
We evaluate the sensitivity of large, gadolinium-doped water detectors to antineutrinos released by nuclear fission explosions, using updated signal and background models and taking advantage of the capacity for seismic observations to provide an ...

SABO-Optimized VMD for Seismic Damage Assessment of Frame Structures Considering Soil–Structure Interaction

open access: yesBuildings
Accurate structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for ensuring safety and preventing catastrophic failures. However, conventional parameter identification methods often assume a fixed-base foundation, neglecting the significant influence of soil ...

Application of EPS Geofoam to a Soil–Steel Bridge to Reduce Seismic Excitations

open access: yesGeosciences, 2019
There have only been a limited number of analyses of soil−steel bridges under seismic and anthropogenic (rockburst) excitations. Rockbursts are phenomena similar to low-intensity natural earthquakes.

Feasibility of using neural networks to obtain simplified capacity curves for seismic assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The selection of a given method for the seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings is mostly dependent on the scale of the analysis. Results obtained in large-scale studies are usually less accurate than the ones obtained in small-scale studies.

Advancing mine pillar design: Evaluating traditional methods and integrating AI for enhanced stability of pillars in the Great Dyke, Zimbabwe

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
B1 is bord width 1, B2 is bord width 2, L is the pillar length, W is the pillar width, red color and letter A represent the pillars, and white color and number 1 represent excavated areas. Pstress is the average pillar stress; σv is the vertical component of the virgin stress, MPa; and e is the areal extraction ratio. e = B o B o + B P ${\rm{e}}=\frac{{

Research progress and current status of dynamic wave propagation characteristics in rock mass: A review

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This review elucidates the velocity–dispersion–attenuation coupling mechanisms of wave propagation in rock masses, compares six representative models, and reveals how pressure, temperature, mineral composition, and anisotropy jointly control dynamic responses in complex geological media.
