Design of Columns for Seismic Loads
Journal of the Structural Division, 1973An analytical solution for the column safety problem is presented herein with earthquake engineering applications. The probabilities of failure are computed for 25 columns subjected to design loads as well as certain earthquake excitations. Results indicate that the vertical earthquake excitation of earthquake motions should not be ignored in the ...

Design of piles under seismic loading
2021Seismic forces on piles may be distinguished from a phenomenological viewpoint in two modular contributions stemming from different yet simultaneous interaction phenomena. Along with bending moments arising from the oscillation of the superstructure (the so-called inertial interaction), piles experience additional bending moments which are induced by ...

SELECTION OF DESIGN COMBINATIONS OF SEISMIC LOADS WITH OTHER LOADS
Natural and Technological Risks.

Roof‐Snow Load for Seismic‐Design Calculations
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1992Statistical information on daily ground-snow loads and the conversion factor between roof and ground loads is used to determine the appropriate snow load for seismic design calculations. For mathematical simplicity both the daily ground snow and the conversion factors were modeled by lognormal distributions.

SFTs under seismic loading: Conceptual design and optimization tools
2021Submerged Floating Tunnels (SFTs), also named Archimedes Bridges, are a way of crossing waterbodies that has recently attracted the interest of Researchers. However, a number of issues are still open to conceptualization and optimization, as those pertaining to the general arrangement of the SFTs and of the approaches to the shores in case the ...

Design of anchor reinforcement for seismic tension loads
Engineering Structures, 2018Abstract This paper presents a study of cast-in anchors in reinforced concrete subjected to both monotonic and cyclic tension. Laboratory tests using 25 mm [1 in.] diameter anchor bolts showed that the code-conforming anchor reinforcement may not ensure anchor steel failure though it effectively prevented concrete breakout.

Effect of Design Seismic Loads on a Highway Bridge
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1984The measured and calculated response of a five‐span reinforced concrete highway bridge subjected to static lateral loads is presented. The experimental studies included nondestructive static tests of the bridge loaded by hydraulic jacks at the intersection of piers and the deck, as well as quick‐release dynamic tests.

The 2003 International Building Code seismic design procedures do not result in uniform risk throughout the country. A comparison is made between the expected lifetime damage to two identical buildings—one in the western United States and other in the central United States. The seismic design
