Globally, the largest tsunamigenic earthquakes have occurred along subduction zones. Devastating events exceeding magnitude 9, such as those in Chile, Sumatra, and Japan, struck in regions lacking instrumental records of similar events.

Between 2008 and 2013, the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake and the Ms 7.0 Lushan earthquake occurred successively in the Longmenshan fault zone. Their aftershocks delineated a prominent seismic gap approximately 50 km long, hereafter referred to as the WLSG.

A 150 km segment of subduction plate boundary along the Pacific coast of Mexico between the aftershock areas of the Colima earthquake (Jan. 10, 1973; Ms = 7.5) and the recent Petatlán earthquake (March 14, 1979; Ms = 7.6) has not experienced a major earthquake since 1911 and, thus, has been designated as a seismic gap.

Gravity and seismicity over the Guerrero Seismic Gap, Mexico

Four detailed (average station interval = 5 km) gravity transects were recently conducted in the Pacific coastal region of Mexico. A differential GPS technique was used to determine the elevation and coordinates of the gravity stations. The profiles are oriented northeast‐southwest and extend from the coast up to ∼60 km inland.
