SEISMIC ENERGY BASED DESIGN OF ISOLATED BRIDGES

A procedure is developed to design seismically isolated bridges by optimally redistributing strain energy between the bridge system main components. Seismic isolation in bridges relies on the horizontal decoupling of the bridge deck from the substructure, with added energy dissipation to limit relative displacements.

Partially isolated bridges: simplified seismic assessment and design

Partially restrained seismically isolated continuous (PRSI) bridges are a particular class of isolated bridges in which isolation bearings are placed only between the superstructure and the piers, while steel-plate stoppers or other devices restrain the transverse motion of the deck at the abutments.
