Centrifuge modeling of rocking-isolated inelastic RC bridge piers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Experimental proof is provided of an unconventional seismic design concept, which is based on deliberately underdesigning shallow foundations to promote intense rocking oscillations and thereby to dramatically improve the seismic resilience of structures.

Mechanism for Deep Crustal Seismicity: Insight From Modeling of Deformation Processes at the Main Ethiopian Rift

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2020
We combine numerical modeling of lithospheric extension with analysis of seismic moment release and earthquake b‐value in order to elucidate the mechanism for deep crustal seismicity and seismic swarms in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER).

A New Concept of the Mechanism of Rock-Tectonic Bursts and Other Dynamic Phenomena in Conditions of Ore Deposits

open access: yesГорные науки и технологии, 2020
In mining technical literature, the prevailing idea is still that rockbursts in open pits and underground mines are caused by gravitational forces produced by the overburden rock mass, put forward in the 20th century by S.G. Avershin and I.M.

Seismic and Aseismic Slip Compete to Regulate Permeability Evolution During Fault Reactivation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Crustal permeability can be created through microearthquakes as observed at field and laboratory scales. The respective roles of seismic and aseismic slip in governing permeability evolution remain ill‐constrained.

Moment tensor analysis of transversely isotropic shale based on the discrete element method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 2017
In this study, the moment tensor of transversely isotropic shale was analyzed using a discrete element method-acoustic emission model (DEM-AE model). Firstly, the failure modes of the shale obtained from the acoustic emission (AE) events and physical ...

Matched filtering for the seismic moment tensor

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1976
By a process of matched filtering it is possible to deconvolve a small number of acceleration or strain records for the moment rate tensor of a seismic source. Theoretically, one horizontal accelerometer (or strain meter) or two vertical accelerometers is sufficient. Practically, five to ten records can be shown to suffice.

Seismic moment tensor event screening

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 2020
SUMMARY Event screening is an explosion monitoring practice that aims to identify an event as an explosion (‘screened in’) or not (‘screened out’). Confidence in event screening can be increased if multiple independent approaches are used.

Advances in crosshole seismic reflection processing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
In recent years there have been significant advances in the acquisition and processing of crosshole seismic reflection data, and the method has been shown to be a high resolution imaging technique.

Performance-Based approach in seismic design of embedded retaining walls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The increasing use of the underground spaces and the last seismic events in the urban areas have driven many researchers of different countries to deepen the knowledge on the dynamic behaviour of the structure embedded in the subsoil.
