Seismic Response Modification Factors

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1999
The response modification factor plays a key role in the seismic design of new buildings in the United States. To date, the values assigned to this factor are based on engineering judgment and have little sound technical basis. Any improvement in the reliability of modern earthquake-resistant buildings in the United States will require the systematic ...

Vertical Seismic Response Spectra

Journal of the Power Division, 1976
Response spectra are derived from 30 historical vertical motion accelerograms recorded on hard or rock sites and used as a basis for a recommended design response spectra. Accelerograms were corrected for baseline and instrument errors using routine processing methods.

SEISMIC GROUND RESPONSE AT LOTUNG (TAIWAN)

Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN 2015), 2015
In this paper the ground response of the Lotung experiment site during the strongmotion LSST7 occurred on May 1986 is simulated using two different numerical schemes: a simple equivalent-linear visco-elastic and a fully-coupled non-linear approach.

Non‐linear seismic response and liquefaction

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1978
AbstractThe essential cause of the growth of pore pressure during cyclic loading is identified as an ‘autogenous’ shrinkage or densification of the solid phase of the soil and this is related to a strain path parameter. Introduction of this ‘shrinkage’ coupled with an elasto‐plastic behaviour of the soil skeleton allows a full non‐linear dynamic ...

Seismic Response of Underground Structure under Vertical Seismic Excitation

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Seismic response of shallowly buried underground under vertical seismic excitation is studied. In order to simplify the analysis two steps are adopted in the analysis. In the first step structure is looked at as rigid body, and the dynamic response of the structure under vertical seismic excitation is obtained on the basis of soil-structure dynamic ...

Undrained seismic response of underground structures

2020
Underground structures must be able to support static overburden loads, as well as to accommodate additional deformations imposed by seismic motions. It seems well established that the most critical demand to the structure is caused by shear waves traveling perpendicular to the tunnel axis, which cause distortions of the cross section (ovaling for a ...

Stochastic Seismic Response of Structures

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1971
Records of strong-motion earthquakes are simulated using a filtered shot noise. Twenty sample records are then used to simulate the response of a structure subjected to earthquake excitation. The stochastic model used to generate the artificial ground acceleration records is designed to produce sample records similar to those of real strong-motion ...

Seismic Response of Rocking Blocks

Earthquake Spectra, 2018
Monuments, equipment, chimneys, and older intake structures for dams all may rock during strong ground motions. These and other rocking objects are vulnerable to overturning, leading to potential economic loss and disruption to affected communities. The need for methods to estimate rocking response is supported by the breadth of structures susceptible

Seismic response for reservoir fluid evaluation

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 1987, 1987
Summary This paper describes a study of the relationships among lithology, pore-fluid content, stratigraphy, and the seismic response for clastic sedimentary rocks. We show how it is possible to generate seismic models from the petrophysical measurements.

Seismic response to sea‐floor diffractors

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 1983, 1983
The range and resolution capability of the seismic reftection method is ultimately restricted by noise phenomena. The desired signal component in a conventional seismic record corresponds to compressional waves reftected from depth in response to compressional forces induced at the shot point.
