Reducing column‐face demands in circular Reduced Web Section (RWS) connections

open access: yesce/papers, Volume 9, Issue 2-3, Page 1885-1890, September 2026.
Abstract Brittle fracture in welded steel moment connections is often initiated by concentrated stresses and low‐cycle strain demands at the column face, particularly in the groove weld and adjacent heat‐affected zone. Circular reduced web section (RWS) openings can act as ductile fuses within the beam web and relocate inelasticity away from the beam ...

Weak‐Story Mitigation and Drift Redistribution in Moment‐Resisting Frames Using Stepping Rocking Walls

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2760-2780, September 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the seismic response of moment‐resisting frames retrofitted with a stepping rocking wall, with emphasis on weak‐story mitigation and residual drift reduction under both ordinary and pulse‐like ground motions. Nonlinear response‐history analyses are conducted on 9‐story and 20‐story SAC Los Angeles frames.

Empirical Model of Post‐Earthquake Restoration Time for Building Components Based on Data From the 2022 Fukushima‐ken Oki Earthquake in Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2897-2915, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Estimation of the time required for damaged building components to return to their pre‐earthquake conditions through repair is a critical element in assessing the seismic resilience of buildings, and it requires consideration of uncertainty.

Uneven Impacts of Seawall Heightening on Tsunami Risk Reduction under Rising Sea Levels: Probabilistic Scenarios from the Japan Trench

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2948-2965, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Disasters exacerbated by climate change have prompted adaptation measures, including seawall heightening, which is an effective approach to protecting coastal areas. However, the combined effect of rising sea levels and tsunamis can create a compound coastal hazard, in which long‐term sea level rise amplifies the impact of tsunamis.

SEISMIC RETROFIT OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

open access: yesJournal of JAEE, 2004
This paper presents the seismic retrofit practice of existing highway bridges in Japan. At first, the histories of the past seismic design codes, past seismic evaluation, and past seismic retrofit practices for highway bridges are described. Then the damage caused by the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake and the lessons learned from the earthquake are ...
