Quantification of Direct Benefits of Functional Recovery‐Based Design for Seismic Resilience
Lessons from recent major earthquakes have shown that current life‐safety‐centered seismic design practice falls short in ensuring a desirable post‐hazard recovery. Extensive economic losses, high demolition rates, and long recovery have signified a gap between design targets and society's expectations of seismic performance of code‐compliant buildings.

Development of Liquefaction‐Targeted Design Basis in U.S. Seismic Provisions
Seismic design criteria for new buildings in the United States have historically focused on life safety performance objectives through minimizing the potential for structural collapse. Development of design criteria to meet this performance objective has evolved over time, leading to the current, risk‐targeted maximum considered earthquake (MCER ...

Seismic Retrofit of a Multispan Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridge with Friction Pendulum Devices
The paper deals with the proposal and application of a procedure for the seismic retrofit of an existing multispan prestressed concrete girder bridge defined explicitly for the use of friction pendulum devices as an isolation system placed between piers ...

ABSTRACT This article presents a capacity‐based assessment procedure for beam–column (b–c) joints of reinforced concrete frames with floor slabs and transverse beams. The procedure extends a previously proposed assessment methodology for determining the hierarchy of strengths and the sequence of events in symmetrically reinforced planar b–c joints.

Seismic evaluation and retrofit of reinforced concrete structures
The destructive earthquakes in the world clearly reveal the importance of the seismic behavior of the structures. The current study proposes and numerically investigates a systematic technique for the seismic assessment and retrofit of reinforced ...

The economic impact of seismic retrofit on heritage reinforced concrete buildings [PDF]
Groups of actors (architects, engineers, inhabitants, investors) put different priorities in interventions on heritage buildings. Seismic retrofit can be done at different levels, from avoiding collapse up to assuring immediate postearthquake ...
