Predicting Atmospheric Effective Sound Speed Using Synthetic Infrasound and Machine Learning

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract We introduce a machine learning (ML) model that reconstructs atmospheric conditions at the location of an explosive source using regionally recorded synthetic infrasound. A convolutional neural network (CNN) processes full waveforms and source‐receiver geometries to estimate the vertical profile of effective sound speed.

Cycled Fluid Injection Limits Maximum Earthquake Size by Controlling the Cadence of Seismic Moment Release

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Controlling fluid injection is widely considered a key to limiting the size of injection‐induced seismicity, yet whether and how it limits earthquake size remains debated. We perform injection‐reactivation experiments on critically stressed faults to test how different injection strategies shape slip and seismic moment release.

A New Surface Rupture of the 1556 Huaxian M ∼ 8.5 Earthquake Revealed by Rock Surface Luminescence Dating of a Bedrock Fault Scarp and Colluvial Wedges

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Bedrock fault scarps and their associated colluvial wedges provide key evidence for reconstructing paleoearthquakes. We apply rock surface luminescence dating to a bedrock scarp on the Huashan fault in central China, using OSL‐depth profiles (DPs) from multiple heights. Results reveal two coseismic displacements of 6.8 and >1.0 m.

Hydrogravimetry Enables Quantification of Alpine Groundwater Dynamics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Groundwater plays a critical role in the functioning of alpine hydrological systems, and its importance is expected to increase under climate change. However, quantification of groundwater processes in these systems remains highly uncertain. Terrestrial time‐lapse gravimetry (TLG) is a geophysical and geodetic technique whose measured variable

Salt Precipitation‐Driven Rock Failure Mode Transition During Geological CO2 Sequestration

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Salt precipitation has emerged as a critical factor affecting injectivity, reservoir stability, and the potential to trigger near‐wellbore microseismic activity during geological CO2 sequestration. While previous studies have primarily focused on the brine acidification induced by CO2 injection, triggering geochemical reactions in carbonate ...
