This paper presents a multichannel method for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio, when the noise is purely random. We show that under some assumptions the contribution of each wave may be individualized. The quality of the results is sensitive to the estimation of the interspectral matrix from the initial traces.

Abstract In Chapter 7, we turn to seismic waves and earthquakes. The chapter starts with an overview of the internal structure of the Earth and of the role of plate tectonics in triggering earthquakes. We then turn to seismic waves near the surface of the earth, which consist of Rayleigh waves, Love waves, bulk dilatational waves ...

Introduction to radiative transfer of seismic waves
2005We present a detailed introduction to radiative transfer in seismology. Starting from the well-known phenomenological approach for acoustic waves, the theory is then generalized to elastic waves, including the treatment of polarization and mode conversions.

Seismic wave propagation is founded on the principles and laws of classical physics: Hooke’s law relating stress and strain, the theory of elasticity, the principles of conservation of energy and momentum, Newton’s laws of motion, and the wave equation.
