Expected seismicity and the seismic noise environment of Europa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Seismic data will be a vital geophysical constraint on internal structure of Europa if we land instruments on the surface. Quantifying expected seismic activity on Europa both in terms of large, recognizable signals and ambient background noise is ...

Instability mechanism and failure characteristics of underground cavern in block system under the action of seismic waves

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Seismic waves with tensile stress, high amplitude, and low frequency are most likely to trigger block instability and sliding. Blocks with a single sliding surface are more prone to movement than those with multiple constraints, and roof‐positioned blocks are especially vulnerable to slide.

Rupture Process of Subduction-Zone Earthquakes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
This review is primarily concerned with the rupture process of large subduction-zone earthquakes determined by various seismological methods, and with its interpretation in terms of an asperity model.

Carbon Dots: An Emerging Frontier for Green and Sustainable Civil Engineering Materials

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Traditional civil engineering materials (CE materials) are usually involved with high‐energy consumption during manufacturing, significant maintenance costs, and substantial environmental impacts throughout their life cycles. The progress of nanotechnology is catalyzing a green and sustainable transformation within the field.

Rock Stability Assessment Based on the Chronological Order of the Characteristic Acoustic Emission Phenomena

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2018
Sudden inelastic deformations in rock are associated with acoustic emission (AE). Therefore, AE monitoring technique can be used to study the fracture processes of rock.

The EU's Strategy for Sustainability: A Landmark Turn With the European Green Deal?

open access: yesEuropean Policy Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While the European Green Deal (EGD) has been widely recognized as a milestone in the EU's sustainability strategy, scholars disagree on the nature of the policy change it represents. Critics highlight its limited social and environmental ambitions, despite its portrayal as a “man on the moon” moment.
