On the use of a seismic sensor as a seismic source
Geophysics, 2013ABSTRACT We investigated the use of seismic sensors as small seismic sources. A voltage signal is applied to a geophone that forces the mass within the geophone to move. The movement of the mass generates a seismic wavefield that was recorded with an array of geophones operating in the conventional sense. We observed higher-frequency (

Seismicity, seismotectonics and seismic hazard of Italy
Engineering Geology, 2000Abstract A first generation of probabilistic seismic hazard maps of the Italian country are presented. They are based on seismogenic zoning deriving from a kinematic model of the structural tectonic units and on an earthquake catalogue with the foreshock and aftershock events filtered out. The following ground motion parameters have been investigated

Seismic Soundoff: The sound of seismic
The Leading Edge, 2023Paolo Dell'Aversana highlights his recent article in The Leading Edge, “An expanded idea of imaging in geophysics through multimodal data analysis.” The article explores a dual-sensory approach to understanding seismic data. This episode unlocks secret information hiding in seismic data that is waiting to be discovered.

Relationship between accelerating seismicity and quiescence, two precursors to large earthquakes
The Non-Critical Precursory Accelerating Seismicity Theory (PAST) has been proposed recently to explain the formation of accelerating seismicity (increase of the a-value) observed before large earthquakes.

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2013
Although West Africa is generally an area of very low seismicity, an exception is a concentration of activity in Southern Ghana, especially near to the capital, Accra, which was heavily damaged by earthquakes in 1862 and 1939. Modern instrumental seismicity is poorly understood due to the limitations of seismic monitoring in the country. In this study,

Abstract Unmigrated reflection seismic energy recorded at the earth's surface, for example in the form of common-offset records, often provides a remarkably coherent picture of subsurface structure. Coherent as it might be, however, this picture is not correct, suffering from several distorting effects, most notably those of ...

Estimating the seismicity of Venus by scaling Earth’s seismicity
2023With the selection of multiple missions to Venus by NASA and ESA planned to launch in the coming decade, we will greatly improve our understanding of Venus as a planet. However, the selected missions cannot tell us anything about the seismicity on Venus, which is a crucial observable to constrain the tectonic activity and geodynamic regime of the ...

Seismic Design Requirements for Regions of Moderate Seismicity
Earthquake Spectra, 2000The need for earthquake‐resistant construction in areas of low‐to‐moderate seismicity has been recognized through the adoption of code requirements in the United States and other countries only in the past quarter century. This is largely a result of improved assessment of seismic hazard and examples of recent moderate earthquakes in regions of both ...

Tilt and Seismicity Changes in the Shumagin Seismic Gap
Science, 1983Changes in the ground surface tilt and in the rate of seismicity indicate that an aseismic deformation event may have occurred between 1978 and 1980 along the plate boundary in the eastern Aleutians, Alaska, within the Shumagin seismic gap. Pavlof Volcano was unusually quiescent during this period.

Application of seismic tomography to induced seismicity investigations
Proceedings of Rock Mechanics in Petroleum Engineering, 1994Abstract Two case studies are presented, which highlight the potential application of seismic velocity imaging to induced seismicity investigations. Velocity images may be produced using data currently recorded with seismic monitoring arrays.
