Seismic images of the megathrust rupture during the 25th October 2010 Pagai earthquake, SW Sumatra: Frontal rupture and large tsunami

open access: yes
The Mentawai segment of the Sumatra subduction zone is locked and likely to produce a large earthquake in the near future. A part of this locked zone ruptured on 12 September 2007 producing twin earthquakes of Mw = 8.5 and 7.9.

Elastic properties of rocks from the seismogenic zone and minimum fault size to nucleate megathrust earthquakes

open access: yesProgress in Earth and Planetary Science
The elastic properties of rocks in subduction zones are indicators of the stress states and determine the critical length required for earthquake nucleation.

Estimation of Recurrence Interval of Large Earthquakes on the Central Longmen Shan Fault Zone Based on Seismic Moment Accumulation/Release Model

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
Recurrence interval of large earthquake on an active fault zone is an important parameter in assessing seismic hazard. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw 7.9) occurred on the central Longmen Shan fault zone and ruptured the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault (YBF) and

Grain Size and Fluid Effects on the Frictional Behavior of Simulated Carbonate Fault Gouge

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Carbonate rocks exhibit a span of clast and grain size in fault zones. However, the effect of grain size distribution on the frictional behavior of carbonate faults and its implications for natural and induced seismicity remain poorly understood.

The rupture process of the Hualien M7.3 sequence on April 3, 2024

open access: yesEarthquake Research Advances
The Hualien M 7.3 earthquake on April 3, 2024, was a significant and strong earthquake in Taiwan, China in the past two decades. The rupture process of the main shock and strong aftershocks is of great significance to the subsequent seismic activity and ...

OBS Data Mining Reveals Seismic Structure and Dynamics of the Oceanic Blanco Transform Fault, Northeast Pacific

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Deformation along oceanic transform faults is partitioned between seismic and aseismic slip, controlled by lithology, thermal structure, and fluid circulation. We analyze one year of data from a 54‐station ocean bottom seismometer network deployed across the Blanco Transform Fault (BTF), Northeast Pacific.

Cajon Pass and the Southern San Andreas Fault System: Earthquake Cycle Stress Accumulation and Present‐Day Loading

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract With over a century since the last major rupture affecting the wider Los Angeles region, tectonic stress has steadily built along the southern San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems, raising concerns of an imminent large earthquake. Cajon Pass, located at the junction of these faults, represents a critical site for potential through‐going ...

Ripplocations provide a new mechanism for the deformation of phyllosilicates in the lithosphere

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Phyllosilicate minerals are critical components of seismogenic fault, shear and subduction zones. Here, the authors provide a new deformation mechanism for phyllosilicates, based on newly discovered crystallographic defects in biotite (ripplocations ...

Crustal Thermal Structure and Exhumation Rates in the Southern Alps Near the Central Alpine Fault, New Zealand

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2020
We investigate orogenic uplift rates and the thermal structure of the crust in the hanging wall of the Alpine Fault, New Zealand, using the hypocenters of 7,719 earthquakes that occurred in the central Southern Alps between late 2008 and early 2017, and ...
