Universal Piezoelectric Seismometer

A universal piezoelectric seismometer is proposed that can simultaneously record linear and angular accelerations through two separate channels. The operational principle of the seismometer and the features of its design are described; the mechanical and electric circuits are considered.

Abstract Methods are developed to analyze the effects of thermal noise and seismic noise in masking small earth vibrations. The procedure is applied to a simple seismometer, seismometers with electronic and galvanometer amplifiers, and a seismometer with a shunt capacity.

a4bstract Eaton's method of determining the seismometer damping is extended, in order to make it more easily applicable to any value of period and damping. The theory of the seismometer response to the release test is developed, showing that, for the application of this method, both release and tapping tests are equivalent.
