Ecological selectivity of the emerging mass extinction in the oceans [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2016
To better predict the ecological and evolutionary effects of the emerging biodiversity crisis in the modern oceans, we compared the association between extinction threat and ecological traits in modern marine animals to associations observed during past extinction events using a database of 2497 marine vertebrate and mollusc genera.

Stochastic extinction and the selection of the transmission mode in microparasites [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of The Royal Society Interface, 2008
Stochastic fluctuations in the transmission process of microparasites generate a risk of parasite extinction that cannot be assessed by deterministic models, especially in host populations of small size. While this risk of extinction represents a strong selection pressure for microparasites, it is usually not clearly separated from the deterministic ...

Early-childhood social reticence predicts SCR-BOLD coupling during fear extinction recall in preadolescent youth

open access: yesDevelopmental Cognitive Neuroscience, 2019
Social Reticence (SR) is a temperament construct identified in early childhood that is expressed as shy, anxiously avoidant behavior and, particularly when stable, robustly associated with risk for anxiety disorders.

Selective attention modulates neural substrates of repetition priming and 'implicit' visual memory: suppressions and enhancements revealed by fMRI [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Attention can enhance processing for relevant information and suppress this for ignored stimuli. However, some residual processing may still arise without attention. Here we presented overlapping outline objects at study, with subjects attending to those

Structure design and theoretical study on infrared optical properties of Ag/Ge core shell particles

open access: yesCailiao gongcheng
To obtain particles that meet the requirements of spectral selective radiation for infrared stealth, the infrared optical properties of Ag/Ge core-shell structures were calculated using Mie scattering theory and finite element simulation, respectively ...

Ketamine accelerates fear extinction via mTORC1 signaling

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2017
Impaired fear extinction contributes to the persistence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and can be utilized for the study of novel therapeutic agents.

Selective Extinction and Speciation: Their Influence on the Structure and Functioning of Communities and Ecosystems

open access: yes, 1982
The structure and functioning of ecosystems can be explained in large part on the basis of the theory of selective extinction as a complement to evolutionary theory. It dates back to A. R.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Selectivity of terrestrial gastropod extinctions on an oceanic archipelago and insights into the anthropogenic extinction process [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2011
Anthropogenic impacts have led to widespread extinctions of species on oceanic islands but the nature of many of these extinctions remains poorly known. Here we investigate extinction selectivities of terrestrial gastropods from the Ogasawara archipelago in the northwest Pacific, where anthropogenic threats have changed over time, shifting primarily ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.
