Internal Perspectivalism: The Solution to Generality Problems About Proper Function and Natural Norms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper, I argue that what counts as the proper function of a trait is a matter of the de facto perspective that the biological system, itself, possesses on what counts as proper functioning for that trait.

The selective advantage of reaction norms for environmental tolerance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
A tolerance curve defines the dependence of a genotype's fitness on the state of an environmental gradient. It can be characterized by a mode (the genotype's optimal environment) and a width (the breadth of adaptation). It seems possible that one or both

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Alcohol, nutrition and health maintenance: selected aspects [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Nutrition Society, 2004
In view of the developments in health care relating to the increased prevalence and incidence of chronic diseases and the continuing increase in health-care expenditure, more attention should be paid to health maintenance and disease prevention. Any strategy that can influence health maintenance is of interest, especially lifestyle factors such as ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as a tool for probing the functionality of ion-selective membranes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Recent success in lowering of the detection limit of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) to part-perbillion levels have opened up the possibility for their application in environmental analysis.

One Health – an Ecological and Evolutionary Framework for tackling Neglected Zoonotic Diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Understanding the complex population biology and transmission ecology of multihost parasites has been declared as one of the major challenges of biomedical sciences for the 21st century and the Neglected Zoonotic Diseases (NZDs) are perhaps the most ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Selective Requirement for Maintenance of Synaptic Contacts onto Motoneurons by Target-Derived trkB Receptors

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 2016
Synaptic contacts onto motoneurons were studied in mice in which the gene for the trkB neurotrophin receptor was knocked out selectively in a subset of spinal motoneurons.

Case Report: Evaluation strategies and cognitive intervention: the case of a monovular twin child affected by selective mutism [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2018
The present work describes the assessment process, evaluation strategies, and cognitive intervention on a 9 years old child with selective mutism (SM), a monovular twin of a child also affected by mutism.
