Biodiversity Buffers Phytoplankton Biomass Production Against Nanoparticle Pollution Through Increased Facilitation. [PDF]
Biodiversity can buffer ecosystems against environmental stressors, yet its role under nanoparticle pollution remains unclear. Using freshwater phytoplankton communities exposed to copper oxide nanoparticles, we show that higher species richness alleviates productivity losses through increased facilitation among species.

Removal of estrogens from primary settled sewage by repeated culture of Selenastrum capricornutum
Biotransformation and biodegradation of estrogenic compounds by bacteria and even fungi have been reported widely, but the role of microalgae in the elimination of estrogens from municipal wastewater treatment plants and their interaction with other ...

Surfactant (Genapol OX-80) toxicity to Selenastrum capricornutum [PDF]
A non-ionic surfactant (Genapol OX-80) was proposed as a means of reducing destructive crayfish activity in rice. In order to study the toxicity of this product on algae, a test in accordance to the ISO 8692 protocol (1989) was performed. The growth inhibiting effect of the pure formulation of Genapol OX-80 was studied on Selenastrum capricornutum in ...

Abstract Bioavailability models, for example, multiple linear regressions (MLRs) of water quality parameters, are increasingly being used to develop bioavailability‐based water quality criteria for metals. However, models developed for the Northern Hemisphere cannot be adopted for Australia and New Zealand without first validating them against local ...

A Framework for Algae Modeling in Regulatory Risk Assessment
Abstract The use of toxicokinetic–toxicodynamic (TKTD) modeling in regulatory risk assessment of plant protection products is increasingly popular, especially since the 2018 European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) opinion on TKTD modeling announced that several established models are ready for use in risk assessment.

Abstract In regulatory risk assessment, surrogate species of fish, aquatic invertebrates, and primary producers are tested to assess toxicity and subsequently the risk of pesticides to freshwater biota. This study evaluates whether the standard, surrogate test species (mostly temperate in latitudinal distribution) used in many parts of the world are ...
