Zero Excess Sludge Production in a Thermophilic MBR System: Performance and Energy Consumption Evaluation

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 8, August 2026.
A full‐scale thermophilic pure‐oxygen process coupled with ceramic ultrafiltration achieves over 85% volatile solids removal and extremely low biomass yields, enabling substantial sludge reduction. Despite higher energy demand, the recovery of soluble COD and robust long‐term performance make this approach a sustainable and regulation‐resilient sludge ...

Alleviation of phosphorus rather than nitrogen limitation driven by permafrost and landscape effects on Dahurian larch forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 8, Page 2590-2601, August 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Permafrost thaw is reshaping nutrient dynamics in boreal forests, but its impacts on tree nutrient limitation and functional strategies remain poorly understood. Clarifying these responses is crucial for predicting the response of boreal forests to climate change.

TolC Is Required for a Mixed‐Linkage β‐Glucan (MLG) Biosynthesis: Engineering Bacteria for MLG Overproduction

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 8, August 2026.
TolC is identified as an essential component of the mixed‐linkage β‐glucan (MLG) biosynthetic machinery in Sinorhizobium meliloti, likely enabling polymer export. Co‐expression of tolC, bgsBA, and pleD* significantly enhances MLG production and enables its synthesis in non‐native bacterial hosts.

Hybrid Biomass From Co‐Culturing Filamentous Fungi on Food Waste for Alternative Leather Material Production

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 8, August 2026.
Graphical abstract shows fungal‐fungal co‐culture in food waste derived media with the scale‐up cultivation to produce alternative leather materials (Created in BioRender. Wijayarathna, E. R. K. B. (2026) https://BioRender.com/9iz8hh3). ABSTRACT Co‐culturing fungi offers a promising strategy for generating hybrid fungal biomass with structural and ...

GBR 12909, a Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, Differentially Modulates Affective, Exploratory and Cognitive Domains in Zebrafish

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 64, Issue 4, August 2026.
Dopamine transporter inhibition is linked to bipolar disorder, a cyclic condition difficult to mimic in animal models. Here we observed that a single dose of GBR12909 disrupted zebrafish behaviour across multiple domains, triggering anxiety‐ and despair‐like states alongside impaired working memory and cognitive flexibility.
