A modular strategy has been applied to synthesize large, porous, self-assembling capsules. The coupling of tricyclic building blocks incorporating glycoluril hydrogen-bonding units and derivatives of triethylbenzene produces monomers which readily form homo- and heterodimeric assemblies (calculated structure is shown). Large guests can be trapped while

Templeting and self-assembly represent the two extremes of the spectrum of determinate pattern-assembly processes. A templeted pattern can be defined as one that requires a prepattern or templet explicitly specifying the final topology of the pattern. Conversely, a self-assembling pattern can be defined as one for which the inherent constraints of the ...

Self-Assembly of 1,4-Benzenedimethanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gold
Langmuir, 2010A study of the self-assembly of 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol (BDMT; HS-CH(2)-(C(6)H(4))-CH(2)-SH) monolayers on gold is presented. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are characterized by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) measurements.

Self‐Assembled Fluorescent Chemosensors
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2006AbstractSelf‐assembling and self‐organizing methodologies are powerful tools for the “bottom‐up” approach for the realization of complex structure with functional properties. Recently, this concept has been extended to the design of fluorescent chemosensors providing new exciting potentialities for the development of innovative sensing systems.

Experimental self-assembly: the many facets of self-assembly
Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, 1999Abstract The self-assembly of matter is manifested throughout the hierarchy of the universe in a myriad of modes, both biotic and abiotic. It is not only an area of deep interest as a fundamental prerequisite to life, but it is now emerging as a strategy to many new unanticipated synthetic architectures, unique properties and commercial applications.

Self-assemblies of amphiphilic cyclodextrins
European Biophysics Journal, 2007Cyclodextrins are natural cyclic oligosaccharides widely used as "molecular cages" in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, food and cosmetical industries. The optimization of their pharmacological properties has led to the synthesis of numerous analogues.

Decanal and N -amino- N ′-1-octylguanidine (AOG), combined at 28 μ M each, mediated erythrocyte lysis within 80 minutes under physiological conditions. By contrast, no lysis was observed after 20 hours with either decanal (56 μ M ) or AOG (100 μ

Self-Assembly and Self-Assembled Monolayers in Micro- and Nanofabrication
1999Despite the extraordinary success of current techniques for microfabrication, new techniques are needed. One reason is scale: optically based lithography is reaching the lower limits for the size of features it can produce (˜100 nm). Another is efficiency: methods such as electron beam lithography are presently linear processes and will require ...
