Self-assembly is expected to become a dominant fabrication technique for the nanodevices and systems of the future. Traditional, or passive, self-assembly techniques have great difficulty in producing the asymmetric structures needed by the applications. This work discusses self-assembly methods that use active assembly agents (robots).

The design of a machine which is composed of homogeneous mechanical units is described. We show the design of both hardware and control software of the unit. Each unit can connect with other units and change the connection by itself. In spite of its simple mechanism, a set of these units realizes various mechanical functions.

Self-assembly is a process by which pre-existing components organize into patterns or structures without human intervention. Such processes are responsible for the generation of much of the order in nature. This thesis investigates the use of self-assembly in autonomous robots, and relates the findings to the biological literature.
